Transfer Credit Equivalencies, Credit by Examination, and Prior Learning Assessment

The Technical College System of Georgia's policy requires all students to complete a minimum of 25% of the selected program’s credit hours in residence at Southern Crescent Technical College. The 25% does not include advanced standing through the transfer of credit, military credit, credit by exemption, credit by experience, or articulation.

Transfer Credit Equivalencies

Southern Crescent Technical College evaluates and accepts coursework for degree-level coursework earned at postsecondary institutions accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Transfer credit for coursework completed at non-regionally accredited institutions may be considered on a case-by-case basis. The College reserves the right to accept or deny such credit for degree, diploma, or certificate-level coursework.

Transfer credit is awarded for courses that are comparable in scope, content, and quality to the College’s own curriculum. Only courses completed with a grade of "C" (2.0 on a 4.0 scale) or higher are eligible for transfer. Courses completed on a Pass/Fail or Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory basis are not accepted.

Transfer credit evaluations are completed only for students who have submitted a current admissions application and have been granted accepted status for the applicable term by the Admissions Office. Evaluations of college transcripts generally require 10–15 business days for processing, excluding weekends, holidays, and College closures. During periods of high volume, additional processing time may be required.

Transfer credit evaluations require official transcripts. Transcripts must be sent directly from the issuing institution and cannot be accepted if submitted by the student. Please request that official final transcripts from all institutions attended be sent directly to registrar@sctech.edu or through Parchment.

Transfer credit evaluations for transcripts containing in-progress coursework are limited to completed English and Mathematics courses. To review and award transfer credit for any remaining coursework, the College must receive a final official transcript reflecting final grades for all courses attempted. Students with outstanding final transcripts will have a registration hold placed on their account, which will remain until the required final official transcript is received.

Students who wish to have prior college credit evaluated for transfer or intend on using a funding source that requires the evaluation of prior college credit, such as federal financial aid, HOPE Scholarship, or Veterans Educational Benefits, must submit all post-secondary transcripts along with their admission application.

Courses transferred from the University System of Georgia and private colleges accredited by The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges may be viewed at this link: TCSG-USG General Education Course Transfer Chart. The list of courses shown is not a final or complete listing. Check this website frequently for updates.

Students with International Coursework

Students with international coursework seeking an evaluation for transfer credit are required to have their foreign educational credentials and documents evaluated by an independent evaluation agency. The agency used must be accredited by NACES.

The following is required to receive transfer credit for international education credits:

  • Course -by- course evaluation for all post-secondary colleges
  • The evaluation agency must send an official evaluation and transcript directly to Southern Crescent Technical College in a sealed envelope or email the evaluation directly to the Admissions Office or Registrar’s Office.  Refer to the US Network for Education Information (USNEI), a US Department of Education (ED) administered website and public-private partnership that provides a list of possible credential evaluation services.
  • Students who choose to have their evaluations mailed directly to them must not open the sealed envelope. Evaluations that are opened or emailed directly to a student's personal email address are considered unofficial and will not be accepted for transfer credit.
  • Coursework must be equivalent in both content and credit hours to those required in the Southern Crescent Technical College program, and
  • A grade of C or better earned.

Credit by Examination

Southern Crescent Technical College awards credit by examination for the programs listed below. Examinations recognized by Southern Crescent Technical College and the minimum scores required for credit are provided.

Prior Learning Assessment (Experiential Credit)

Southern Crescent Technical College recognizes that learning can take place in a variety of settings other than the College classroom. Students who have completed documented training through law enforcement, the military, or similar organizations that provide transcripts from the training may be eligible for college credit. Only current students who have successfully completed at least three (3) hours of credit at Southern Crescent Technical College are eligible to request credit through experience. Students wishing to be granted credit through experience should obtain a Request for Credit for Experiential Learning Form from the Academic Affairs Office. Along with the form, the student must submit official copies of transcripts that list all training. Training hours must approximate the contact hours for the requested college course. The program coordinator will review the documentation. If all requirements are met, the document will be approved by the Vice President for Academic Affairs / Designee, a grade of EXP is assigned and credits are awarded. Quality points are not calculated into the GPA. Experiential credits most likely will not transfer to other colleges; although, transferability is always up to the receiving college. There is no fee for credits earned through experience.
